Obituary for Marion Hill Aspinwall

Marion Hill Aspinwall, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. She joins her beloved husband of 55 years, James H. Aspinwall III, who died nine years ago. She leaves behind her five devoted children and their spouses, 15 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild: James IV and Kathleen Aspinwall of Milford and their children James V, Matthew (and his wife Kelly) and Erin; Charles and Lisa Aspinwall of Massachusetts and their children Robert, Elizabeth and Daniel; Timothy and Marie Aspinwall of Stratford and their children Kate and Patrick; Mary and Michael Kroll of Illinois and their children Mollie (and her husband Brad and great-grandson Ryder), Michael, Marissa and Mary Beth; and Jude and David Heiger of Pennsylvania and their children Jack, Samuel, and Mairead.
Marion was born in 1931 and grew up in Hartford. She was the daughter of the late John Glenwood and Marion Cullen Hill and one of five children. She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy and St. Joseph College, and attended the University of Connecticut School of Social Work.
Marion loved life and was known for her kind, caring and generous spirit, positive outlook, and devotion to family and friends. She met the love of her life - Jim - at a collegiate debating match and the two were married in 1955. Marion accompanied Jim to his overseas U.S. Navy assignments in Bahrain Island, Persian Gulf and Naples, Italy. When Jim completed his service, they settled in Stratford where Marion supported Jim’s legal career and they raised their five children. Marion was employed for many years by the Stratford Board of Education where she was well regarded for her work with English language learners. She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed hosting dinner parties for friends and family. But most of all Marion loved her family and she and Jim were especially proud of all their grandchildren.
Marion’s four brothers - John, George, Richard and Joseph predeceased her. She is survived by their wives, Sally Hill, Anne Hill, Jean Hill, and Karen Hill. She is also survived by members of her husband’s family - Jane and Jack Connell, Jon and Jackie Aspinwall, Justine Aspinwall and Les Harriman, and Edward Austin and predeceased by her sister-in-law Joan Austin. Marion also leaves many nieces and nephews and their families, as well as dear longtime friends.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford on Friday, August 9th from 4:00-6:00 pm for visitation. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 12:00 PM directly at St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow at Putney Cemetery. To those who so desire, contributions can be made in Marion’s memory to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 or a charity of your choice.
